50:192:301:02 Interactive Storytelling or: “Help, I’ve Never Met My Main Character!”
TTH 3:00PM – 4:20 FA-217
Nash
Video games are being used to tell new stories. Although classic storytelling will always form a solid underpinning for narrative in any medium, the introduction of a new axis – ‘Interactivity’ – is quickly subverting the standard paradigms of linear storytelling. This not only challenges the structures we are accustomed to, but gives us a new “wild west” of storytelling, where few rules have been formalized and rampant experimentation is slowly unveiling what works and what doesn’t. In this class, we’ll play, analyze, and write about a range of “story-driven” games, drawing on classics of the 80s and 90s, the modern AAA space, and the rapidly growing indie- and art-game scenes. We’ll examine the various ways video game writers have thus far embraced interactivity to tell stories not possible in any other medium, and we’ll begin to place these classics on a spectrum of interactivity that runs from fully-authored to fully-emergent and everything in between. The goal is to immerse the student in a body of canonical “standards” that will provide the basis on which to explore the emerging rhetoric of this new narrative space, and to ultimately inform their own exploration of the medium as meaningful contributors.
